Tennessee
With a fascinatingly rich history, a world-famous music scene, and some of the most exquisite scenery in the country, it should come as no surprise that Tennessee welcomes over one hundred million tourists each year. This is a destination that will impress year-round, no matter the season, with a wide range of attractions to suit just about everyone.
History buffs will love learning more about Tennessee’s past. From the War of 1812 to the Civil War, several important battles have been fought in Tennessee over the years. The Shiloh National Military park, which is where one of the most eventful Civil War battles took place, commemorates this time, as does the Tennessee portion of the five-state Civil War Trail. There are currently around 150 sites on Tennessee’s section of the trail to explore, and there are more that are continuously being added.
Of course, music history is almost just as important in Tennessee. From country to bluegrass to rock ‘n’ roll, so many musical genres had their start in this state. While Tennessee’s varied music history can be experienced no matter where you go in the state, Nashville is still one of the prime spots. Home to numerous popular music artists, from Sheryl Crow and Taylor Swift to the Black Keys and Jack White, Nashville’s nickname of the Music City couldn’t be more true. You will also find many music-related attractions dotted throughout the city, including the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and Honky Tonk Row. You will also find some of the state’s Music Pathways in Nashville, as well as in just about every other city and town in Tennessee. These areas have been certified as being big players when it comes to the state’s music history, giving you plenty to explore.
For many, the natural beauty that can be found throughout Tennessee is an even bigger call than the state’s history and music culture. East Tennessee is where you will find the Great Smoky Mountains, which are not only celebrated for being the most-visited mountain range in the entire country, but also for its status as a world biosphere. The Tennessee River Trail also offers up some great views, with this route featuring some charming historic towns that are beautifully set off by the backdrop of the river.
Foodies will love Tennessee’s food scene, with Memphis in particular known for being home to some of the best BBQ in the state. While Memphis may have a stellar reputation, Southern comfort food can be found no matter where in the state you go. Whether you are looking for fine dining restaurants, soul food shacks, or farm-to-table venues, you will definitely not go hungry in Tennessee! There are also plenty of breweries, distilleries and wineries sprinkled through the state where you can learn more about how your favorite drinks are created and, of course, indulge yourself with a sample or three.
